Album Review

Tonight, Sold Out captures a concert from 2007, which does prompt the question, Can Enuff Z'Nuff sell out venues in 2007? and while it's unclear whether this show was actually sold out, there's little question that they have enough of a cult to tour successfully and then sell live albums. That audience will surely enjoy this tight 11-song set, where the band plays with energy and crowd-pleasing pizzazz — enough to keep the faithful in the fold, even if it's not quite enough to win over the skeptical. Then again, this isn't designed for them; it's for the fans who have stuck around long enough to care that there's a live album from Enuff Z'Nuff in 2007, and for those listeners, this will be quite enjoyable.

Basically a reissue of "Live"

If you don't have "Live", then this is the only way (on iTunes) to get this album. The last two tracks are mislabeled: #10 is "Let It Go", which was released on the "Extended" CD (pretty rare), and #11 is New Thing. In 2007, Donnie Vie wasn't singing with the band (Johnny Monaco was), and guitarist Derek Frigo (whose swooping style is unmistakable) was dead by '07. And to top it off, the songs were recorded in a studio and had crowd noise dubbed in. So, barring the fact that this is a mislabeled re-release of a not-live recording from 1997, it's a nice collection of tunes played differently from the official releases. With a crowd.

If there is such a thing as false advertising in rock & roll, then Enuff Z'nuff is one of its textbook examples. Packaged in garish peace-glam attire by their record company, the group was wrongly lumped in with the disposable pop-metal bands of the late '80s (Poison, Warrant, etc.) rather than appreciated for the truly gifted power pop act that they were. By the time they finally managed to shed their deceptive camouflage, it was much too late to turn public opinion, or their fortunes, around. ...
