iTunes Review

Fans of Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings’ musical accord will surely find familiar warmth in the organic tones and gripping vocal harmonies between folk music heiress Sarah Lee Guthrie (daughter of Arlo) and her husband, Johnny Irion. The opening serenade to spring, “When the Lilacs Are in Bloom,” exhibits two artists who obviously play music together as often as possible—their picking, strumming, and singing together are flawless. Even as talk of Emmylou Harris and Gram Parsons is thrown around, the comparisons to those legendary high-lonesome harmonies fit these two nearly perfectly. The bare quality of “In Lieu of Flowers” lets the listener home in on Guthrie and Irion’s inflections and perfect congruence. The two are also purveyors of stellar acoustic guitar tones. They prefer to microphone their instruments, resulting in a natural and organic resonance as heard on the rootsy “Eyes Like a Levee.”

Folksong ( Live)

Tradition lives on in Sara Lee Guthrie. Sara Lee Guthrie (Arlo's daughter) and husband Johnny Irion have touched my heart once again with their tender love ballads. Two guitars and harmony create a simple, yet moving album. The songs When the Lilacs Are in Bloom and In Lieu of Flowers bring a nostalgic recall of earlier days. These traveling troubadores are earning their accolades though hard work, hard traveling and well written lyrics, tasteful accompaniment and perfect harmonies. Sara and Johnny do the memory of grand daddy Woody proud.

While she may not have envisioned it early on, Sarah Lee Guthrie, the daughter of Arlo Guthrie and granddaughter of Woody Guthrie, ended up answering the call of family tradition, releasing her self-titled debut on the family-owned Rising Son Records in 2001. Careful observers will notice that her first recorded appearance was as a toddler vocalist on dad's 1981 album Power of Love. As an adolescent, she would also sing with her dad on the Grammy-nominated children's album Woody's 20 Grow Big Songs....
