This band covers a lot of ground in a short period of time, and they do it well. From the pop mastery of 'Nothing' to the multi-layered classical-tinged 'Sold' and on through the urban-edged 'Solidify' baleen seems to draw influences from everything mundane and fantastical- Magnifico (The Mule) draws its title from a science -fiction character in an Isaac Asimov series. A solid effort.

Baleen initially started out as an instrumental group comprised of Mike Vagianos (guitar), Brian Wingate (guitar), and Phil Disher (drums). The three tinkered with elements of jazz, R&B, and electronica for a fresh, sophisticated sound. Personality Plus, released in 2000, captured such ambience, but nothing was set in stone.
