Editors’ Notes

This seven-song EP nicely encapsulates all of Ryan Adams’ brilliance. With the genuine give and take of an excellent backing group in the Cardinals, Adams has a crisp, authentic sound. The Alice In Chains cover of “Down In a Hole” generates the most amusement since it takes a grunge dirge and twists it up into a country interloper. Cold Roses’s “If I Am a Stranger” is backed off its quick pace and turned into a sorrowful acoustic lament. “Dear John,” in alternate form on Jacksonville City Nights, aches with gorgeous country harmonies. The title track relies on Adams’ fragile voice. “My Love for You Is Real” is a great band effort with piano, lead guitar and harmonies that do the trick. “Blue Hotel,” the tune written for Willie Nelson, has a firm grip on Nelson’s somber side. “This Is It,” which previously appeared on Rock N Roll as a rigid, tough rocker, is here in a full band version that’s easy-going and engaging.

Customer Reviews

Absolutely Bringing his "A" Game

Follow the Lights is a very strong EP, especially for having only 2 original new songs on it- Follow the Lights and My Love for you is Real. The studio version of Blue Hotel (a song Adams wrote for Willie Nelson's Songbird album) is solid as is the studio version of Alice in Chain's "Down in a Hole" (probably the strongest on the entire album, LISTEN TO HIS VOICE!!!) Both live in studio tracks- 6 & 7- are ridiculously amazing. My only complaint is the Cardinalized version of This is It... I like it, but love it more on Rock N Roll. A great companion to Easy Tiger. I can't understand how anyone would write a negative review on tracks 3-7.

So Excited.

I had NO idea Ryan was coming out with a new CD and I just happened to stumble upon it when looking at the new releases last night on iTunes. Ryan Adams is one of my all-time favorite musicians and I am really, really happy with this new 7-song CD. I think his work with the Cardinals is some of the best and if you're a fan of Cold Roses and Love is Hell, I think you'll really appreciate this. "If I Am a Stranger" is one of my favorite songs and this studio version of it is soooooo good. I really hope the rumors are true that Adams is coming out with a box set sometime this year. He is amazing. Trust me, Follow the Lights is definitely worth $4.99

Dear Ryan,

10 bucks says you're just trying to get off the label with this one. 1. follow the lights is nice 2. quit re-doing unreleased oldie's, make people look for these treasures. Sounds good thou. 3. you gave willie the good version of this. the vocals you used here took you to far away from the real melody. you should have put the live version of your solo night in sf, that is the version that changed me, but it was super rough so i understand. 4. Imperfectly Perfect 5. Come on, if it ain't broke... 6. ...don't fix it 7. Whoever's vibrato that is, Graboff or Casal, it doesnt go good with you. And I know I know, you don't want it to be about you anymore, but come on, I do. Just because Neil Young and Robert Plant put out bad records on the same day doesnt mean you can. I'm only kidding, a bit.
