Recorded in the wake of band principals Mac McCaughan and Laura Ballance ending their romantic relationship, Foolish finds Superchunk both stretching out and looking inward. Certainly, opening the record with the slowly unfurling, self-effacing ballad “Like a Fool” announces a dramatic break from their signature, stage-dive-inspiring pop-punk salvos, while the band mine new emotional depths through the patiently paced, scabrous jangle of “Driveway to Driveway” and “Keeping Track.” But “Water Wings” proves they can still deliver adrenalized anthems when the mosh pit beckons.
