The ‘70s saw Rod Stewart transform from a rootsy-bluesy rock vocalist into one of the era’s most successful pop singers. He traded critical respect for commercial success. Why he wasn’t allowed both might have more to do with his playboy persona and what critics detected as a lack of seriousness on Stewart’s part towards his craft. He was, after all, one of the most gifted vocalists of his generation. “You’re Insane” and “Born Loose” aren’t among Stewart’s finest songs, yet are not without their excitement, but the artistic ambitions aren’t much more than to have a good time. For a pure cheese groove, “Hot Legs” has plenty of attitude, while “You Keep Me Hangin’ On” is Motown updated and done well if a bit overlong at over seven minutes, casting one ear towards the Supremes and one more emphatically at Vanilla Fudge. “You’re In My Heart” remains one of Stewart’s most affecting ballads and was a deserved hit, whereas album closer “I Was Only Joking” is one of Stewart’s most autobiographical, touching and even slyly funny songs.
Foot Loose and Fancy Free
My music preference hangs in the many categories but there are a few sentimental classics I file---of which Rod Stewart in stow. Tracks 5,6, and 7 all time favorites. To this day, I still get his assuaging version and some of these chant worthy lyrics calming my head on wistful days. I was a freshman in college 1978-79, got the album from an ex- (on again of again - you know the deal) - and this man, Rod, he sang me to sleep, sang me to the depths of my sadness, passion and back again in these tunes. I swear he saved me just knowing that he had loved -- a love that could never be... this man was my father.
Foot Loose & Fancy Free!!!!! Rod Stewart!!!!!
This album is very underated... Over the years I could never understand why this album never got the credit that it deserved... It has some really good music on it... Allmusic gave this album 2 stars & I feel that it deserves a better rating then that... I find it hard to believe that an album like Tonight I'm Yours gets 4 stars when in my opinion this album is much better....
My favorite, besides him and The Faces!
