Album Review

A departure from the expansive arrangements of the previous two albums, Love Is a Strange Hotel is a low-key acoustic collection of covers. Even unlikely choices, like Aztec Camera's "How Men Are" and 10cc's "Things We Do for Love" are pulled off in their own subtle and charming way.

Love Is A Strange Hotel

I first heard Clive Gregson and Christine Collister as members of Richard Thompson's band on the WATCHING THE DARK triple retrospective, and on the live cuts such as AL BOWLLY'S IN HEAVEN and CAN'T WIN the power of Christine Collister's voice in backing and harmony vocals soars seemingly to the heavens. This duo produced several albums in the late 1980's and early 1990's, and after their split continue to record and tour individually.

In the "better late than never" department. it's time for you to discover the magic that was "Gregson and Collister".

Clive and Christine 's earlier work consited of original compositions and an occassional cover, but LOVE IS A STRANGE HOTEL is a collection of covers by other artists, some familiar (Jackson Browne, Joni Mitchell, Springsteen, 10CC) and some more obscure and eclectic (Merle Haggard, Aztec Camera, Paul Carrack)- Gregson and Collister sang the songs, played all the instruments, and produced the album. And being that so many of the songs might be familiar, LOVE IS A STRANGE HOTEL is an ideal introduction to this duo who's career never really climbed above cult status, and deserved more recognition back in the day.

If you're a fan of UNPLUGGED music, perfect harmony and musicianship, this is a release you'll fall in love with and leave you wanting for even more.

Clive Gregson and Christine Collister were the most moving and memorable U.K. folk-rock duo to emerge since Richard & Linda Thompson. Gregson's wry tales of the ins and outs of love, sung in Collister's heartbreaking voice, have earned the duo (and subsequent solo work) respect and a devoted following, though commercial success and mainstream recognition have eluded them. Gregson (born January 4, 1955) was the founder of Any Trouble, a pub rock/new wave quartet, in Manchester in 1975. The band's...
