Album Review

Every Avenue was every inch the embodiment of emo pop in late 2009. From their look (asymmetrical haircuts and soulful stares) to their sound (spotless production, clean guitars, and a bit of Auto-Tune) they were located dead center in the mainstream of the style. Their second album, Picture Perfect, is a tuneful, mostly melancholy affair that delves into broken relationships, broken hearts, and the girls who caused them, and for a change of pace, romantic struggles. It could have made for a disheartening slog through their heartbreak journals, but to their credit, Every Avenue, and especially singer David Ryan Strauchman, show a real sensitivity to the material, and the mix of ballads and uptempo tracks keeps the album from getting bogged down in sadness. Overall, there isn’t any new ground being broken here, but the band retraces the steps of others with enough style and passion to make the album a satisfying listen.

This truly is, "Picture Perfect"

Let's face it, I had my doubts about Every Avenue after listening to Shh. Just Go With It, but they've clearly proven me wrong. For a while, I thought that Every Avenue was just an ordinary band that had every one of their songs sounding the same... Boy, did they prove that wrong. I also thought that some of their lyrics were generic, but again, I was proven wrong with this album. Catchy hooks, deep lyrics, diverse song types, this album has got it all.

Track By Track:

1. For Always, Forever - 9/10 - A great opener for the album, with the catchy hooks that the name "Every Avenue" boasts. I absolutely love some of the lyrics from this song, hah. "Looking back, we were so naive... What happened to the days where we shared our dreams?"

2. Mindset - 10/10 - No matter how pop-ish this sounds, I absolutely love this song, xD. It's one of those songs that you can completely relate to, and one that you just can't help but sing along to. The transition between between the already upbeat For Always, Forever to the even more upbeat Mindset adds energy and volume to the album. So far, so good.

3. Tell Me I'm A Wreck - 8/10 - A very solid song. They keep the energy up, and don't go generic on the lyrics at all. The instruments blend very well with the vocals in this song, and the album in entirety, to be honest.

4. Picture Perfect - 10/10 - Favorite song from the album. Kind of like an "anthem", haha. The hook has got to be the catchiest hook I've ever heard... I find myself singing this in my head ALL DAY, literally.

5. Happy The Hard Way - 10/10 - A slower song, with very deep message... By the vocals, you can tell how intense this song is, and how much true feeling is put into this. Music at its best. Probably the most beautiful song on the album, lol.

6. Girl Like That - 8/10 - This song makes me laugh, lol. More of a mid-tempo song, really. Also takes a different perspective on songs like this, in the meaning that rather than talking about getting over something or being hurt, it talks about just being curious as to what to do with a "Girl Like That".

7. Saying Goodbye - 7/10 - Ehh. Not my song, really. I just didn't like much about this song at all.

8. Finish What You Started - 9/10 - Another upbeat song, which seems to be Every Avenue's new favorite type of song. Amazing lyrics. "If you have the nerve just to walk away, then kill me with the words that you didn't say..."

9. I Forgive You - 9/10 - The ROFLMFAO song of the album, lol. I laugh so much at this song, just because of his lyrics. Looking at the title, and hearing the first verse, you don't expect this to be the kind of song that it truly is, and it just makes you smile. "I'm gonna miss watching you while you sleep... 'Cause that was the only time I ever found some peace."

10. The Story Left Untold - 10/10 - An amazing ballad. Everything about this song, it just screams out perfection to me. To be honest, this song actually made me cry out of how easily I could relate to it. It cuts deep, but it just shows how talented Every Avenue is.

11. Clumsy Little Heart - 7/10 - Not really my song either, it just doesn't sound like Every Avenue to me.

12. Until I Get Caught Red Handed - 10/10 - This song is great, lol. It shows how broad Every Avenue's lyrics can be, rather than always being about relationships. Really catchy hook, and it closes the album pretty well. "In the shadows I have stood... Until I get caught red handed."

We'll be waiting for your next album, Every Avenue. Don't let us down. ;)

BUY THIS

Every Avenue has been my favorite band for the past 3 years, and I was so nervous when I heard they were coming out with a new cd, because their first full length was absolutely amazing, and i loved every song on it. However, this album definitely shows a growth in maturity and sound. They sound more refined without losing the rawness. Basically, this album is perfect, buy it, you won't regret it. Every single song is amazing.

Near Perfection

Every Avenue always makes fantastic records and this is no exception. The hooks and riffs are just as pronounced and stylized as they were on the last album, staying true to themselves. Matt Black appears to be quite adept and is perfect to fill in for Cam on his LP debut. Overall, another great album, worth every cent you pay.

Biography

Formed: 2003 in Marysville, MI

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Every Avenue's energetic combo of emo and pop took root in 2003, when members David Ryan Strauchman (vocals, piano), Joshua Randall (guitar), Jimmie Deeghan (guitar), Cameron "Cam" Grestiner (bass), and Michael Govaere (drums) first came together in Marysville, Michigan. A self-titled record was released that same year on the band's own tab. By 2007, however, Fearless Records had noticed Every Avenue's promise and signed them to the label's roster. The six-song Ah! EP was issued that summer, and...
