Album Review

It has been questioned whether Quincy Jones will best be remembered as a producer of pop hits (Thriller) or for his massive jazz output. After an unsuccessful early attempt as a jazz trumpeter, Jones focused on the challenges of his main interest, arranging and conducting. As part of the Finest Hour series from Verve, 15 of Jones arrangements from 1956 through 1981 have been collected spotlighting his work with vocalists Sarah Vaughan and Dinah Washington and top-notch orchestras including Harry "Sweets" Edison, Clark Terry, Freddie Hubbard, Phil Woods, and Roland Kirk.

The answer to the question

Obviously he's remembered moreso for his pop contributions than jazz, seeing as he was not mentioned at all in Ken Burns history of jazz DVD. This album's compositions are very well done and exhibit his interest in Be-Bop as well as the Brazilian movement that gripped America in the early 60's. I love these tracks and this album is awesome. If you like jazz, cop this!!!
