Editors’ Notes

An indie-rap veteran and major star in Canada, Moka Only (a.k.a. Ron Contour) has been steadily working for two decades now; he's released more than 100 records under various aliases and on a zillion different labels. Ayatollah is a Queens, N.Y.—based producer who's crafted hits for a wide assortment of emcees, including Mos Def, Cormega, Tragedy Khadafi, Ghostface, M.O.P., and Pharoahe Monch, among countless others. On Bridges, they come together to give fans an undeniably funky project overflowing with neck-bending, loop-driven beats and clever, unpredictable wordplay. Moka's mellow, almost monotone flow and breezy singing meander around Ayatollah's roughneck drums and multi-genre samples, with rhymes about girls, hip-hop, and anything else that pops into his head. It's definitely a little weird and at times almost nonsensical (especially on "Eckhart Tollie"); this set isn't for everybody. But there's plenty of abstract funk in the mix, and adventurous listeners will be rewarded with many high-quality jams. The deluxe version offers five bonus tracks. Check out "Come Along," "Set Up a Mic," and "Get This Style."

Customer Reviews

Don't Sleep...

How can a wack LP like Pluto's have nearly 300 reviews and this LP has NO reviews. That means people aren't even being exposed to good music. Instead another clone (a bad one at that) gets a brilliant marketing scheme and top billing. C'Mon Man!!

Distinguishing music from "music"

I agree with Se'phus. Pluto's LP is so bad. I mean, future blows. It's not real music at all. No talent. Just an auto-tuning overload, and stupid redundant catch phrases. This music sounds pretty good actually, and great by comparison to fake rappers like future. People need to take the time to actually listen to what it is about certain music that actually appeals to them. Find out what makes good music. Then go find more good music. Then buy or download if u prefer, said good music. Then share that good music. This can make the world a better place filled with a population of introspective and collaborative individuals.

One of Canada's busiest B-boys, Moka Only is an incredibly prolific artist. Since he appeared on the hip-hop scene in the in early '90s, the Vancouver-based MC and producer self-released more than a dozen full-length cassettes of his material. However, it took several years for him to attract widespread attention, through a collaboration with fellow Canadian Len and his own official debut album. Teamed with partner in rhyme Prevail, Moka Only began freestyling at house parties as a teenager, before...
