Album Review

Widely acclaimed as his best album, Passion and Warfare finds Steve Vai coming into his own as a composer, as well as bypassing vocals almost entirely. His style isn't quite as derivative of influences Frank Zappa and Joe Satriani as it was six years earlier on Flex-able; while some of Vai's sense of humor is still evident on tracks like the cock rock strut of "The Audience Is Listening," it is mostly replaced by a spiritual reflectiveness on ballads like "For the Love of God" and "Blue Powder" and dignified, committed rockers like "I Would Love To" and "Liberty." Vai is a more distinguished composer than most of his guitar-shredder contemporaries, and rather than simply showing off his technique, he isn't afraid to experiment or take chances in his playing. Thus, Passion and Warfare is arguably the richest and best hard rock guitar-virtuoso album of the '80s.

Customer Reviews

One of the best ever!

One of the essential albums for any budding electric guitar player, along with some of Joe Satriani's albums. Vai taught the world how to use a 7-string guitar, (and how to always have your hair blowing in the wind while soloing on stage).

Steves best work

This album is a little peice of god. This is a MUST OWN album for all guitarist, and I believe for everyone who breaths. This is one of those albums that make you speechless after your first run through it. There really arnt that many words for you to say about this album because the music speaks for itself! so HEADS UP!, Pick this one up!

What? You don't already own this album?!?!?!

This CD is absolutely mandatory listening for anyone who plays rock guitar or is a fan of rock guitar. If you only hear one shred guitar CD for the rest of your life, this should be it! Unlike most shredders Vai is a distinguished composer. Every sound counts; it's not just guitar leads over boring rhythm tracks like much of the material by Yngwie, Satch, Michael Angelo, etc. "FOR THE LOVE OF GOD" is my all time favorite rock song - no question about it.

Six-string wizard Steve Vai, along with his onetime teacher Joe Satriani, set the standard for rock guitar virtuosity in the '80s. Born on June 6, 1960, and raised in Carle Place, New York, Vai became interested in the guitar via such legendary artists as Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, and Alice Cooper as a teenager and, upon starting high school, took lessons with an older player from the school, Joe Satriani. Playing in several local bands, Vai quickly picked up on the instrument, and by the age of...
