Album Review

Intimacy reigns supreme on Sharon Van Etten’s debut, which finds the folksinger crooning her melodies over beds of acoustic guitar, keyboard, and overdubbed harmonies. Her lyrics are the stuff of heartbreak and uncertainty — “I wish I knew what to do with you” she laments during the first track, and later refers to herself as a lover’s “consolation prize” — but her performances are confident, both simple in their delivery and subtle in their emotional punch. Because I Was in Love isn’t a bare-boned folk album; rather, it’s the sort of record that unfolds its layers with repeated listens, and the arrangements are often gorgeously lush without threatening to overpower Van Etten’s alto.

because i was in love too.

i cried. this album is so beautiful and has helped me through the worst of times.
thank you.

phew. there still IS great music.

As an artist, midst a slow period, this album made me grateful for any sense of creativity at all. This album is honest, not rushed, and pays homage to a philosophy of awareness. Many questions are presented here, though in Sharon's sound, there is a texture that blankets these mysteries, and thus, calms us. Her voice is the kind you want to have coffee with in the morning. You crave it- and how we wake each day- is that not the most important?

There is something about sharon's music that caught my ear.Call it hypnotic, soulful or honest.Save yourself kind of threw me because of sharon's voice. She seems to have channeled the voice of a country/folk singer from another time. Not flawless or homogenized like most artists today, but that's what makes her interesting..
And she's cute.

Although she was born and raised in suburban New Jersey, Sharon Van Etten's folk music evokes the open landscapes of a more expansive America. A dedicated choir student during her childhood, she studied clarinet, violin, and piano before moving on to guitar. She began writing songs as high school student and sang in a choir group, the Madrigals. She credits her choral experiences as indispensable in learning to musically notate, as well as to sing harmonies. Upon graduation, Van Etten moved to Murfreesboro,...
