Editors’ Notes

Although what makes Springsteen essential is captured on his studio albums, it’s hard to argue with any collection that sports “Spirit in the Night,” “4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy),” “Jungleland,” “Darkness on the Edge of Town,” “The River,” “Brilliant Disguise,” and “The Ghost of Tom Joad.”

Missing Songs

The iTunes review for this album is lengthy, and shows great appreciation for the work of The Boss. It discusses at length the third bonus disc, yet the songs from this disc are not for sale here. Very disappointing! Don't copy and paste reviews that treat an album as complete it if isn't and don't offer one song from the third disc, The Big Paycheck, and not any others!

Only three stars because of the missing third disc.

Where is TRAPPED? Agree with other posts- its a classic- iTunes....we need you to step up and include it in your offerings....

I guess the most essential songs were on disc 3?

I must admit that I don't know much about Bruce Springsteen and I'm not a huge fan. However, as a DJ I purchased this collection thinking that I would be getting all the "essential" Bruce Springsteen songs. I thought I would now have all the hits and popular singles, classic album tracks, and fan favorites. It seems that's not really true. I was recently looking over New York's listener-voted "Top 1,043 Classic Rock Songs" and I must have seen 8 or 9 Springsteen songs on that countdown, that were not included in this collection. On the other hand, more than 70% of the songs that were included in this collection were NOT on the countdown at all. I was also looking over the Top 100 pop hits of each year from the 80's through today, and once again spotted several Springsteen songs that were not in this collection, while many of the songs that are here did not appear anywhere. I can only assume that perhaps all these missing songs were on the 3rd disc? Then again, maybe not. Either way, why sell a collection called "The Essential Bruce Springsteen" if many of the essential songs are not available?

In the decades following his emergence on the national scene in 1975, Bruce Springsteen proved to be that rarity among popular musicians, an artist who maintained his status as a frontline recording and performing star, consistently selling millions of albums and selling out arenas and stadiums around the world year after year, as well as retaining widespread critical approbation, with ecstatic reviews greeting those discs and shows. Although there were a few speed bumps along the way in Springsteen's...
