I wish there were more music like this

When I was 17 I got my first job in the cinema at the mall. Upon receiving my first paycheck I walked down to the music store and bought two cassettes, one Jawbox and the other Fugazi. This was the first music that I had ever really purchased myself. Little did I suspect that I would be buying two of the best albums I'd ever hear.

Jawbox was a great sort of music, a sort you could feel the authenticity and soul of, and a sort which was never afraid to experiment and evolve.
They remain one of the most influential and greatest bands I ever listened to or saw.

I remember I wrote them a letter once. I asked a few questions about the conundrum of remaining an independent band after signing to a major record label and some other stuff. A few months later they came to Pensacola to play (I was lucky enough to see them play in Pensacola twice. Years later I also watched Burning Airlines as well). With some trepidation, I approached J, who was standing alone by the merch stand. I told him I had written a letter about this and right away he said, "I remember your letter." and took up the conversation right on topic answering all of my questions, expounding on the dilemma of making music while trying to earn a living, etc...
We talked for about 10 minutes or so and I remember I walked away thinking, what a cool guy. What a cool band...

Everytime I hear Jawbox now, I'm transported back to that time of my life when there was a scene where bands could be so earnest and sincere in their music. Their wasn't a lot of them, but Jawbox of these greats.

worth it

anything J Robbins touches is awesome.

A riveting listen, start to finish.

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '80s, '90s

During their eight-year existence, Jawbox developed into a top-tier post-hardcore band. While they became one of the most notable acts in Washington, D.C. shortly after their late-'80s formation, and were part of a lineage that included the likes of Minor Threat and Rites of Spring, they were favorably compared to Chicago's Big Black, Naked Raygun, and Effigies as well. Scrutinized for leaving D.C.'s beloved Dischord for a major label -- they were the first to do so -- Jawbox nonetheless released...
