iTunes Review

Drummer John Hollenbeck, who leads the Claudia Quintet, has played with a wide array of jazz and experimental musicians. On 2009’s Eternal Interlude, a large group performs six of his compositions, ambitious pieces that bring to mind modern big band, New Music, and minimalism. The opener, “Foreign One,” is dedicated to Thelonious Monk and is based on the pianist’s “Four in One.” The lengthy, atmospheric title track features lovely instrumental textures, with mallet percussion and piano dappling the surface of woodwind and brass configurations. Fluttering flutes also play a key role, and Theo Bleckmann’s vocals and Gary Versace’s organ nicely color one quiet passage. On “Clouds,” Hollenbeck expands his already rich palette by having several musicians whistle along with a mallet percussion melody and having Bleckmann recite spoken word. “Perseverance” has room for big band charts, a rock beat, free blowing, and solos in the course of its 18 minutes. Eternal Interlude closes with the brief “No Boat,” a tone poem marked by muted brass and wordless vocals.

Customer Reviews

Eternal Interluke

Ethereal, at times otherwordly, and yet authoritative and satisfying. Hollenbeck is a talent and his group substantive and talented.
