iTunes Review

Unlike many of the greatest-hits collections available for Cat Stevens, Gold provides an in-depth look at his career. Thirty-one tracks ensure that one comes away pretty amazed at the richness and expansiveness of Stevens as a folk-pop singer/songwriter troubadour of the early '70s; you might only wonder where a few missing tracks are (“Into White,” anyone?). Stevens' early single “Matthew & Son” opens with a touch of snarling guitar, and “Here Comes My Baby” shows his skill at writing power pop (The Tremeloes had a hit with it in 1967, and Yo La Tengo covered it in 1990). This is further shown with “The First Cut Is the Deepest,” Stevens’ song that became a hit for P.P. Arnold, Keith Hampshire, Rod Stewart, and Sheryl Crow. From there, Gold looks into songs from Mona Bone Jakon, Tea for the Tillerman, Teaser and the Firecat, Catch Bull at Four, and others. Even the 18-minute version of “Foreigner Suite” is featured here, alongside the concise beauty of “The Wind,” “Oh Very Young,” and the face-saving “(I Never Wanted) To Be a Star.”

Worth every Penny

Cat Stevens was a musical genius, his voice is one of the best ever. Even if you don't like folk, this is worth trying. He really deserves so much more credit than he's given, because out of the 70s artists he is in the top 5.

Appropriately titled album

One of the true great singer/songwriters of the 70's. This music will never get old.

A great sampler of the best singer songwriter of the 70's

His raw emotion is captured perfectly in this set. It is the great introduction to the world of Cat. It's also great to see his new single on this album! Here's hoping he keeps plucking at the guitar and makes some more music for us to enjoy! PS- he didn't order a fatwah on Rushdie, do some research before you hate on someone.

Cat Stevens, born Steven Demetre Georgiou, was the son of a Swedish mother and a Greek father who ran a restaurant in London. He became interested in folk music and rock & roll in his teens while attending Hammersmith College and in 1965 began performing under the name Steve Adams. Mike Hurst, a former member of the folk-pop group the Springfields, who had become a record producer, heard him and took him into a recording studio to cut his composition "I Love My Dog." This demo caused Decca Records...
