The neo-trad sound of Randy Travis’ early albums made the ’80s safe for lovers of real-deal country. And when his buttermilk-smooth baritone flows over the old-school honky-tonk feel of “Tonight We’re Gonna Tear Down the Walls” or the ode to undying devotion “Forever and Ever, Amen” (which has probably been played at more weddings than “Here Comes the Bride”), he taps into something timeless that’s still as immediately commanding in the 21st century as it was in 1987.
