Love it

Been hooked for the last few day. The Dodoz are definitely worth a try:)

Such a loss...

...that The Dodoz broke up after such a comparatively short run. So bummed.

If you've not had a listen, they're a French group, but sing exclusively in English. It's hard to put a genre to them, but broadly they're (obviously) rock.

The first time I heard them, it sounded like it was just kind of noisy, thrown together, almost messy. The lead vocalist (Geraldine Baux) kept me coming back--her voice has solid range, and a tremulous quality when she gets to the top register that she nonetheless holds together every time; when you combine the way her accent compliments her unique vibrato, you get a truly memorable vocalist.

Upon a second, third, fourth listen, I started hearing the layers to what The Dodoz were doing. You likely won't get a full appreciation for them if you only hear a song once. They deal frequently with syncopation, tempo changes and key changes. Every single time, they pull it off without a hitch. The drums are never overpowering--he's clearly skilled, but he never hijacks the song. Playing rhythm bass is hard with music like this, but he pulls it off without a hitch. The lead guitar has a unique, "dirty" kind of sound--who knows what combo of amp and pedals he's going with--but more than a lead, he's constantly playing harmony to the vocals in addition to his own duties.

What you'll discover, in the end, is that this unknown, four-piece outfit from France is incredibly talented, a special sound you won't get from anything else out there right now (maybe SOME of Dionysos), and certainly better than anything we have here in the US.

You'll probably find yourself where I am--just plain sad there's no more of them.
