iTunes Editors’ Notes

Following 2001’s First Daze Here, 2006’s First Daze Here Too is the second chapter of unearthed recordings from the pioneering doom-metal band Pentagram. Part two finds the group trying to make its sludgy sound a bit more accessible. More Blue Cheer than Black Sabbath, the album opens with “Wheel of Fortune,” recorded live in the studio in June 1974 at the National Sound Warehouse in Springfield, Va. The following “When the Spring Comes” (from the same session) digs more into the band’s penchant for blasting doom metal with guitars cranked and resonating in the genre’s prerequisite diminished E chord. But then a cover of The Rolling Stones’ “Under My Thumb” interrupts the foreboding eeriness, slightly recalling Blue Cheer’s psychedelic rendition of “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.” There’s also a curious cover of The Yardbirds’ “Little Games,” which may have been another attempt at appealing to label executives. Of course Pentagram is at its best when being itself, as evidenced by such creepy tunes as “Virgin Death” and the menacing “Be Forewarned.”

This is what should be on the radio, not any pop crap crummy wannabe R&B singers, this is what musical artists today should be striving to achieve. amazing.

good stuff

I don't know who the dude is, but he absolutely freakin jams non stop the last three minutes of 20 Buck Spin. Overall the band's sound is a sort of cross between sabbath and deep purple.

One of the most enduring and influential underground bands in heavy metal history, Pentagram's career was almost 15 years old by the time they finally managed to record their first album. Though invariably led by mysterious frontman Bobby Liebling, the band's volatile membership made it difficult to maintain any kind of momentum and kept them confined to metal's outer fringes. But interest in Pentagram's convoluted history continues...
