Album Review

Y&T wasn't the most popular metal band, but they were better than a lot of their ilk, especially in the early '80s. Their biggest failing was that they came along a little bit too early to take advantage of the boom years of the '80s, when metal albums were flying out the stores and topping the charts. Too bad, because they had a good formula, part Van Halen and part AC/DC, who had swagger and hooks. Occasionally, they sounded a little generic, but in a good sense — they played by metal's formulas and delivered satisfyingly. Hip-O's Ultimate Collection proves this by rounding up 17 tracks (including two live cuts) that hit nearly all the fan favorites and metal anthems, plus their lone hit, 1985's "Summertime Girls." It's the definitive word on a good band that would have been bigger if they had better timing.

A great mix from the most overlooked band of all time!

If you have ever seen Y&T live in person they definitely left an impression on you. Few bands can match the raw power and haunting melodies that made Y&T a bay area favorite from the mid 70's to the late 80's. Unfortunately they are best known for the commercially driven "Summertime Girls" as a next to last ditch effort to capture radio play and build a nationwide interest. Alas Y&T has always been more about musicianship than glitter, but even the best have to try what they must to keep a record deal. Songs like "Forever", "Rescue Me", "I Believe In You", and "Mean Streak" personify the true essence of this fearsome foursome. They also are great examples of why lead singer/lead guitarist Dave Meneketti is a true rock afficianado's idol and has influenced so many who followed in his footsteps. This band should have been a much bigger deal than they were. On a side note, fans of John Hughes 80's films "Pretty in Pink" (Ducky's room) and "Weird Science" (Wyatt's room) should check out the posters hanging on the walls in the background. Apparently he was/is a fan too.

AHH THE FIRST CONCERT I ever seen was heart and Y&T this band rocked if you like whitesnake and sammy hagar then you;ll like Y&T

Y&T Live - Go see them!

I was BLOWN AWAY by their performances, their musicianship and how much bloody fun it all was. The performance and delivery blew my mind. We went to see these guys at the Mystic in Petalum, CA and I expected to just enjoy a nice rock show by some old guys still trying to make a living on old glories and relive my teenage fantasy of the music I loved, but I was really and truly rocked. These guys were soooooo freakin' fantastic. I wish I could have gone again the next night, but alas they were SOLD OUT. If you love good music and crave a good show, see these guys when you can. This is the perfect album of the fan favs. for review of their work or for new fans to get the overview of their career.

A legendary live band that arguably never managed to translate its electric on-stage intensity into its studio albums, Y&T stood within reach of the Grail of rock & roll stardom many times in their long career -- but through a series of mistakes, bad timing, and sheer bad luck, the ultimate prize always seemed to elude them in the end. Taking their name from a Beatles song, the group was originally formed as Yesterday & Today in San Francisco, around 1973, by vocalist and lead guitarist Dave Meniketti,...
