Windsor for the Derby settled in Philadelphia after nearly a decade of transient living. Having a solid home base has further cemented the relationship between guitarists Dan Matz (whose solo album Carry Me Over comes recommended) and Jason McNeely, and the result gives Windsor’s sound a consistent anchor that evokes hazy resemblances to an impressive list of potential influences that range from Joy Division and the Cure to Pink Floyd(!). 2008’s How We Lost continues to fuse the duo’s subtle melodicism into their often leisurely rhythms. While the group’s clear debt to the post-punk sound of Manchester, England’s Factory records can be heard in their halting, icy beats, Windsor also trace elements of early-70s Pink Floyd into their rudimentary space rock. “Let Go” begins as a lonesome crawl that hinges on a few well selected notes. “Fallen Off the Earth” recalls the Cure with its deep reverb obscuring the lead vocals and its churning, slashing chords masking the pure popness of the moment. “Hold On” brings the vocals into tighter focus, yet carries a similar British ‘80s new wave vibe.
