iTunes Review

TOKiMONSTA crafts melodies that descend like a cool fog and beats that dip back into the glory years of Ninja Tune before moving the art form forward. The L.A. producer’s seven-track Fovere blends ornate instrumentals (the aptly named “Starlight Lace”) with soulful fare (“I’m Waiting,” featuring Gavin Turek's ethereal coo) and dance-trap thumpers like "Put It Down," where Anderson .Paak's boasts ratchet the energy to a feverish apex. But the DJ plays most ably when weaving enigma, beckoning us into her blur of downtempo, hip-hop, and enveloping ambience.

Can’t stop listening to this album! FOVERE is unique and stands out in a genre that too often sounds like copycats

too great

had to log in at 4 am just to leave this review: I love this album. from top to bottom. it has such fatness: on Put it Down and the rest just makes my hair stand up on end and my body feel waves of emotion. So awesome. Thank you for making it.

Good, but still miss that old Toki sound...

This is a pretty solid EP that gives a sampling of the various Tokimonsta sounds she's developed over the years.

I am not really a fan of the soul/R&B direction she went with Gavin Turek last year, as the tracks really just feel like they're lacking a bottom end. There's no bass! Not enough of the complex layers that turned me on to her music way back when Midnight Menu was released.

That said, when Tokimonsta is on it, she's on. No one can put combine crushing bass with many intricate layers of melody like she can, and that talent is on display with tracks like Starlight Lace and Put It Down. Still, there are less tracks here I'm going to come back to than on, say, Desiderium, which I loved. I do hope we see a Tokimonsta return to form soon, and a little more of the sort of tracks she delivered with Half Shadows and Creature Dreams. I'm still a big fan, but this isn't my favorite of her albums.
