Anthology - Through the Years

For the fan that wants more than the superb single-disc Greatest Hits yet doesn't want to delve into actual albums or the exhaustive, rarities-heavy box set Playback, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers and MCA Records offered the double-disc Anthology: Through the Years in the fall of 2000. This set basically offers all the singles and album rock radio favorites, with a couple of odd selections here and there and one new song, "Surrender." There are a few omissions — "Make It Better (Forget About Me)" isn't here, for instance — but not enough to really be noticeable, especially since this consolidates the bulk of Petty's great songs and plays very, very well. Greatest Hits might have a slight edge to Anthology because of its conciseness, but this double-disc set illustrates that Petty's catalog was deeper than just the hits.
Perfect Hits Collection, but DO NOT buy it on iTunes
All these are fine songs, but this is a Partial Album release because only 36 of the 38 tracks are available. "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around" is absent from Disc 1 and "Surrender", the album closer on Disc 2 is also missing. While neither of these songs compare to the bulk of this album (which expands on 1993's 'Greatest Hits' album by including more songs from Petty's earlier career ['76 - '85]), it still makes this an incomplete album and forces the listener to purchase each of the remaning 34 songs together for $33.66; three times the cost for a new hard copy on eBay (actually, FOUR times the price if you do not mind buying used CDs). My advice would be to purchase the album online or at a local record store and import it right into iTunes and save some green, at least until iTunes restores the album to all 36 songs... or at least offers them at a reduced price. $34 is ridiculous compared to the $11 you can get this 2-Disc Greatest Hits compilation for.
Mr Petty is like a fine wine
I'm serious. Tom and the Heartbreakers are like a good wine, bottle of whiskey-- except they never go bad. Unlike the other reviewer, they seem to be inherently unable to "suck" or make a bad song. If you want good rock and roll (it would seem fewer do these days), you want Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.
To Be Sentimental: The Music of My Childhood...
The memories that these songs bring back are awesome. Driving down back country roads listening to this in the back seat while I pummeled my younger sister. Sweetness... Musical importance is connected to how you associate the lyrics, rhythms, and harmonics with what you are experiencing at that moment in time. Be it the first time, or 50th time. The memories I have, are now being replaced by experinces that I am encountering in young adulthood. I am able to grasp so much more, understanding the significance behind the lyrics in so many of these songs... Tear drop And is it just me, or did Tom have a ton of hits?
