Customer Reviews

This album is as real as they get.

This album forever changed me as a musician, song writer and, sound engineer. Lou and two friends set up a 1" reel to reel tape recorder (bought at a yard sale) which only had two inputs; left and right. They recorded the whole album in one take in Lou's living room. He did little to no post production, left the musical errors alone, and released the album. Before this album, I had never heard anything like it. I now have a great respect for under-polished recording production. It adds a dark flavor to the indie folk sound. The songs are fantastic. He could have turned them into a huge, polished production release and probably had record labels jump in their seats. But instead, he left it sacred... I'm sure the scratchy, sometimes maxed and distorting tracks, musical errors and telephone ringing in Lou's kitchen as the recording pressed on, made any major label rep turn green in the face. LOL!!! For that, I will forever respect Lou Barlow and note him as one of my top five favorite artists of all time. I wont forget to mention that Lou is also one of my favorite lyricists to this day. There is something spooky about an album of which every song describes your life in this abstract way. Nearly a decade has passed since this album came out, and I still listen to it at least once a week. I am surprised to be the first person writing a review on it. I enjoyed this far more than anything Lou did with Sebadoh, The Folk Implosion, or Dinosaur Jr. And every friend of mine who I share this album with becomes just as addicted to it as myself. Props, Lou.... Props.

Sometimes simpler is better, which is definitely the case with Lou Barlow's lo-fi project, Sentridoh. Barlow (former bassist for Dinosaur Jr. and creative force behind Sebadoh) developed Sentridoh as a solo project in 1993 so that he could pursue a stripped-down acoustic form of the music that he had performed with Sebadoh. Sentridoh's first single, "Losercore/Really Insane," was also the very first record put out by Steve Shelley's Smells Like Records, setting the tone for that label's support of...
