Album Review

Drew Emmitt made a name for himself with Leftover Salmon, but as a solo artist, he has to carry the weight of an album himself, which isn't an easy task, as he discovers on Freedom Ride. He can play, sing, and write competently, but without a great deal of individuality — it's a telling point that the most memorable song on the album is a cover of Dylan's "Tangled Up in Blue," which makes the rest of the work seem very pale and anemic. It probably doesn't help that Emmitt tends to favor a bouncy tempo, which is fine for foot-tapping, but not so hot for introspection and memory. He gets some strong backup from the John Cowan Band, but the bottom line is that this record is, at best, an average thing.

Pure Bluegrass Laced Enjoyment

I do not happen to agree with the itunes review. I think that the title does the album justice. If you like Leftover Salmon, you will love where Drew picked up. I thought it was great. I'm trying to think of what songs stand out - but I think that this is a piece of work with so many layed back killer road songs that you would be better off just getting the whole thing.

Freedom Ride

Right from the title cut, this refreshing blend of bluegrass and newgrass just reaches out and grabs you with each track there after lending itself to this incredible listening experience. The only thing missing was the visual but of course you can get that when you see Drew live in concert.

iTunes over ruled!

I found it hard to believe what I was reading when I came across the review written by iTunes. This is some of Drews best work and I find it hard to believe that they didn't list it as a road trip must have! If you like Leftover Salmon, well I think it's where Drew takes the scraps and makes one heck of a hearty stew! Stir it with your party shuffle and serve where it's hot or cold!
