Album Review

The first indication that Archers of Loaf were priming themselves for a harder-edged version of indie rock for their second LP, Vee Vee, was the Vs. the Greatest of All Time EP. Consisting of five taut songs that rank among the best in the Archers' catalog, Bob Weston's production of the EP strikes a near-perfect balance with the songs by giving them a forceful, raw glare. Stray studio noise and loose threads of guitar are strewn across the disc, creating an anxious tension between the raucous release of the songs. Early on, the Archers were indie rockers fond of singing about one insular topic: indie rock. While such an indulgence can sound revolting or pretentious when delivered by less capable bands, the Archers' passion, wit, and ingenuity endear them to any nominally adventurous fan of singalong songcraft and distorted guitars.

Customer Reviews

start to finish it rocks

i used to bicycle freestyle alot in college and this was the most played album in my headphones. even on mixed tapes i would put the whole EP on it. when my ipod is shuffling and one of these songs comes on i usually want to play the whole thing. its great.

Best band you'll never know

... and this five song pack of rock was easilly their best effort. Every song on here, beginning to end, demonstrates why more 'famous' indie rockers like Pavement's Steven Malkamus tried so hard to emulate the geneous of frontman Eric Bachmann's literary whitisisms and boundary-pushing songcraft. For any fan of real 90's rock that's looking for something other than the typical Pixies, PJ Harvey, or Pavement, start here: I promise you'll find it to truly be the Greatest of All Time! (whoah... I just came up with that!) ... Highlights are Lowest Part is Free, Audiowhore, Freezing Point, All Hail the Black Market, and Revenge. Yes, all of them.

Love it

this is so cool i love it!

Formed: 1991 in Chapel Hill, NC

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '10s

The Archers of Loaf were darlings of the indie world in the early to mid-'90s, thanks to an off-kilter sound that was edgy and challenging, yet melodically accessible at the same time. Cornerstones of the Chapel Hill, NC, indie scene that also spawned Superchunk and Polvo, the Archers' chief inspirations were the Replacements and Sonic Youth, but that only began to tell the story. Their music was frequently likened to a more intense, raucous version of Pavement's postmodern pop, and indeed they shared...
