Filles de Kilimanjaro

Filles de Kilimanjaro

Recorded in 1968 with multiple ensembles—during a transitional period for Davis—this album shows the visionary on the verge of going full-on fusion. Influenced by James Brown's funk, the trumpeter found a new groove for “Frelon Brun (Brown Hornet),” while Ron Carter’s bass and Herbie Hancock’s keyboard both electrify the sultry “Tout de Suite.” But the elegant feel of the tune’s opening isn’t far from Miles’ past ballads, making the album an intriguing look at multiple aspects of his approach.
