iTunes Review

In the hands of Tricky, Portishead, and Massive Attack, trip-hop earned a reputation for being dark, even claustrophobic. On their second album, though, Morcheeba preserved the style's sedate tempos and sultry atmospheres while opening up a world of warmth and color. Hip-hop beats and turntable scratches are fleshed out with acoustic guitars, country blues, a splash of reggae, and even sitar, while singer Skye Edwards holds the spotlight with her hushed, soulful delivery. As the cover art underscores, it's best heard in a horizontal position.

Customer Reviews

One of the original trip-hop albums.

1998 served as the emergence of trip-hop, and Morcheeba, along with Everything But The Girl, Portishead and Massive Attack lead the way. This album was chill before chill became a genre. Do yourself a favor, buy the album, pour yourself a drink, and slide onto a comfy couch while you listen to Skye Edwards flow into your sub-conscious. Yes. it's THAT good.

Truly a calming album

I never really got into Portishead or knew why anyone would compare them to Morcheeba. To me they're night and day. I was turned on to this by British radio that happened to play The Sea. I was blown away just by that. Sky Edwards is amazingly soulful. The tittle Big Calm says it all. The opening track is like a rapture, Friction and Shoulder Holster are great as a kind of trippy rock R&B. Part of the Process is a track that points to the bands future direction. Truly Amazing.

Big Calm

The most groove-oriented act in the mid-'90s female-fronted electronica crowd, Morcheeba rely on the sweet, fluid vocals of Skye Edwards and a laid-back mix of fusion, funk, and blues produced by brothers Paul and Ross Godfrey on beats/scratches and guitar/keyboards, respectively. The trio was formed in 1995 when the Godfreys decided to go out on their own after co-producing six tracks for David Byrne's album Feelings. They submitted several tapes of their instrumental demos to labels around London,...
