Album Review

An interesting mix on a recording from 1997 (but a fresh release) from Ray Charles' former guitarist, Kenny Carr. The tone is very West Coast, with a collection of Santa Cruz and New York musicians playing along. Light grooves provide the backdrop for Carr to bounce around the songs on his guitar. A little adult contemporary vibe here and there, which might kill a little of the full jazz credibility, but his style can be nice. Massive shows of virtuosity and speed are few to none, pleasing some and annoying others. The compositions themselves are generally pretty easygoing. Not the most adventurous album by any measure, but a relaxed, calming album made for a lazy beach jazz outing perhaps.
