iTunes Review

Though this is only her second solo album, Marsha Ambrosius' résumé explains why the illustrious Dr. Dre lends a rare guest verse to Friends & Lovers, on the standout track "Stronger" (her take on Sade's "Stronger Than Pride"). Ambrosius got her start as half of the mid-'00s R&B duo Floetry; she's written tracks for Alicia Keys and Michael Jackson and sang vocals for Kanye, Nas, and many others. Her pedigree shines through here as she fuses '80s quiet storm to the ethereal production of contemporary R&B, such as that of Frank Ocean. "69" has a murky underwater groove to it, while "Shoes," about pining for an ex, is classic lilting soul. This is modern R&B that's compellingly fluent in the genre's roots.

So… it's been an incredible journey creating the moments in life that result in the songs you'll hear on this album. Late Nights & Early Mornings serves as the Prequel to what Friends & Lovers I sing to and for right here. From beginning to end, the emotions run to the highest high to extreme lows, from passionate lust to real love. I had to experience LIFE to write these songs. I thank all the fans, the #Marshians you let me be ME!!!

Nice voice handcuffed lackluster production

I like Marsha. I loved Floetry and some of her early solo stuff. She’s got a nice voice but just like her last album, the lack of quality production brings this one down. The music is just uninspired and boring. The most interesting track musically, “Stronger,” is a remake of a classic Sade song, so you can’t really give her full credit for it. Marsha needs to dump her current production crew, because this stuff is just putting me to sleep.

Let down a lil

I thought it would have been much better, but its alright.

Shortly after the end of her gold-selling R&B act Floetry, singer, songwriter, and producer Marsha Ambrosius -- whose biggest claim to fame as a writer is Michael Jackson's Top 20 hit "Butterflies" -- signed with Dr. Dre's Aftermath label. Nothing came from the short-lived alliance. While in creative limbo, Ambrosius -- a Liverpool, England native who moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania -- was nonetheless active, issuing a handful of mixtapes and collaborating with Alicia Keys ("Go Ahead'), Mario...
