Album Review

The Very Best of Diana Krall collects a nice cross-section of tracks the pianist/vocalist recorded beginning with her 1996 breakthrough album, All for You, and moving through to her 2006 effort From This Moment On. These are largely urbane and stylish recordings that range from her intimate and swinging trio work with guitarist Russell Malone and bassist Christian McBride to her lush orchestral and big-band numbers. While this is primarily a compilation for fans of the sophisticated, jazz standards-oriented Krall, Verve does earn some kudos for including at least one cut from her deeply personal and subsequently not as popular effort The Girl in the Other Room. Also featured are cuts from her stellar 2002 concert album Live in Paris. If you're a fan of straight-ahead jazz with a heavy dash of romance and haven't checked out Krall's work, The Very Best is superb place to start.

Krall's Best to Wet Your Whistle

If you know Diana Krall's work, you will have encountered almost all of these songs in other collections and DVDs. If you don't...what a way to get to know an incredible talent and perhaps the best female jazz pianist/vocalist of our time! A sure pleaser and welcomed gift for any jazz music lover. The previously unreleased tracks of "The Heart of Saturday Night", "Only the Lonely", and "You Go To My Head" will round out any Diana Krall Collections and Playlists you might already have...making this new release worthy of checking out!

Can't Get Enough.

This is a good time to have her Greatest Hits cd come out. I figured with the birth of her child that we'll have a long wait for her next cd this would surely make any Diana Krall fan happy for a while. The 3 new tracks alone is enough to want this and it's a great introduction to any new Diana Krall fan to have in their collection.

Maybe a little early

I love Diana Krall, and every song on here is great, but come on. Diana has only been recording for about 15 years, she is still in her prime, and I am expecting many more years of music to come. So I think that this greatest hits album is coming just a little too soon...maybe 20 more years, but not now. If you have never listened to Diana, then sure this is a good choice, you'll be hooked. However, if I were you I would save my money by just buying all of her albums...because you will eventually anyway (go for live in Paris as a starter). Really you are missing a lot of great songs her, and Diana's choices of songs makes all of her albums sound like greatest hits anyway. She really does choose some great songs to record. Even "The Girl in the Other Room" her only album of all originals is a fantastic album. I give this album a tenative 5 stars, because I can't give Diana anything but. Still, I recommend going for broke and just start, or finish, your collection of her albums. They are all worth more than the $9.99 that they cost.

With her pre-bop piano style, cool but sensual singing, and fortuitously photogenic looks, Diana Krall took the jazz world by storm in the late '90s.
