iTunes Review

Sojourn — a musical collective drawn from the Louisville church of the same name — infuses its second volume of updated Isaac Watts hymns with deep-twanging guitars, simmering tempos and passionate vocal performances. The Water and the Blood taps into the palpable longing and reverence present in its source material, then reframes Watts’ exalted words in American roots-music settings. The results are suggestive of Johnny Cash’s final albums in their sense of suffering and triumph, enriched with hints of Daniel Lanois’ atmospheric production ideas. A diverse cast of singers and players render these songs with respect for their sources as well as with a personal sense of salvation. From the moody, blues-tinged atmosphere of “Compel My Heart to Sing” and “Deep In Our Hearts” to the rousing bluegrass feel of “Blest Be the Lamb” and the sweet piano bounce of “Let Your Blood Plead For Me,” Sojourn captures a full spectrum of faith. Especially powerful is the wailing, cathartic treatment given “Death Has Lost Its Sting.”

Buy this album!

Love this record!!!! It makes me feel like I'm in the room with them worshiping! I love that in the liner notes, pastor Mike Cosper said that they intentionally left some mistakes and rawness that they could have edited out via pro tools in the final mixes.....thanks for taking an honest approach to music!! I've had some of these songs STUCK in my head!!! You can hear their hearts for Christ in the music and lyrics!

I'm so cool

The Water and the Blood

There are some really nice elements to this record, but to be honest the recording quality is disappointing. As always, the musicians and vocalists are fantastic--but there is a "demo-like" quality throughout and I know there is a "live band" feel that's trying to be communicated--but to me it's the wrong kind of lo-fi, live sound. It seems that more focus was on achieving some of the gorgeous guitar tones heard, but not on the rest of the elements. I'm not trying to dampen these great efforts, but I greatly appreciate the ministry & efforts of Sojourn, but as a listener I'm hoping this is not the future of what's to come...
