3 Songs, 8 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

Before Susanna Hoffs became a legitimate pop star with The Bangles in the '80s, she was a hardcore music fan with a taste for obscure '60s pop gems. (The first Bangles album had a version of The Merry-Go-Round's "Live," written by Emitt Rhodes and covered with great sympathy and insight.) This three-track EP is a quick little Xmas present for fans, offering up great covers of The Jaynetts' "Sally Go 'Round the Roses," The Beatles' "All I've Got to Do" (where John Lennon wrote his best Arthur Alexander–inspired tune), and The Zombies' "This Will Be Our Year" (a sterling cut from The Zombies' essential, psychedelic, and deliberately misspelled masterpiece Odessey and Oracle). This EP begs for Hoffs to record more often and to sing whatever pleases her, as her natural gift is appreciated by a strong cult following.

The '60s are alive and well!

Whether in her solo stuff, her records with Matthew Sweet, or in the Bangles, Susanna has always loved to harken back to eras past. On this little three-song gem, she, once again, summons the '60s in a glorious fashion. Though Mitchell Froom helmed this project as he did her Someday set, it's a slightly different spin they take on this one. And the songs are all the better for it... "Sally" stays fairly true to the original, while "This Will Be Our Year" goes off on a wondrous Donovan-esque tangent. Legendary status aside, The Beatles could never do up "All I've Got to Do" as sexy as Susanna does.
