Album Review

The Absence are the greatest Swedish melodic death metal band ever to emerge from Florida. Their emulation of the Gothenburg sound, as exemplified by At the Gates and dozens of other acts, is note-perfect. The riffs are catchy; the songs have choruses one can pump one's fist and shout along to; vocalist Jamie Stewart has a hoarse, gravelly bark; the guitar solos are tasteful yet still shred-happy, and the drummer keeps things moving at a steady clip. On this album, the band was still slightly influenced by American metalcore, so fans of bands like As I Lay Dying will hear some of that here, too. But the dominant sound is definitely the melodic Swedish death metal style, so metalheads who enjoy acts like Dark Tranquillity, In Flames, At the Gates, and Arch Enemy will absolutely be pleased by this American equivalent.

Buy the complete album. It is full of great riffs, melodies, brutal agression, and raw energy from a great new band. All of the songs are a barrage of really great musicianship. From your grave will become an instant classic on your metal collection.

Sure people aren't going to compare it to "Master of Puppets", "Paranoid", or "Vulgar Display of Power", but nowadays with the flood of Heavy Metal, Metalcore, Screamo, Death, Black Metal, etc bands, this is a breath of fresh air for metal and other fans alike. The CD starts out with a harmonizing guitar solo(s) and then all hell breaks loose with A Breath Beneath. The amazing thing about this band and this album is that everything feels perfect, the drums keep the song going and then the guitars come in when they need to, all of the instruments are insync and you can tell that each band member knows how to play their instrument and the vocals go well with every song giving a gutural howl now and then. Shure this album isn't perfect, but its pretty damn close. I recommend this whole CD but those looking for the ones that stand out: Necropolis, From Your Grave, My Ruin and Seven Demons. This band has a sound reminiscant to say Iron Maiden mixed with Cradle of Filth. Get this CD and support The Absence.

Not just friends....

Ok, I admit that I might be a bit biased with this review since I'm personal friends with the singer. But trust me, read the other reviews and you'll see that I'm right. I can't stop listening to this album in my car. From the very first note to the last growling vocal these guys don't stop. Jamie is always non-stop and his energy just spews from your speakers. Pete adds the right touch with the solo's...and everyone in the band just comes together. To my friends in "The Absence"'ve made it boys!

Proving that South Florida is still home to thrash metal at its most aggressive, the Absence are a Tampa-based band whose furious guitar work, monstrous vocals, and pummeling rhythms have won them the approval of discerning fans of extreme hard rock. The Absence were formed in 2001 by vocalist Jamie Stewart and guitarist Patrick Pintavalle; both were veterans of the Tampa metal community but believed that the scene was growing stale and needed fresh blood. Both Stewart and Pintavalle were fans of...
