Schubert's music is beautiful to say the least and Rene'e Fleming brings justice to each and every one of his masterpieces with such emotion and feeling that you can't help but be drawn in. Her voice is beautiful and so are the songs. I absolutly love this music and it is absolutly breathtaking.

She just doesn't get it

Some of the sounds are beautiful. The opening of Nacht und Traume really can't be rivaled... but all in all- It's missing the urgency, the immediacy, the importance and necessity of getting these words out, in all the songs. Death and the maiden, for example- there's no immediacy or terror, or differentiation in characters. There seems to be no backstory or meaning for things like Junge Nonne except the text itself- no subtext or reason.... Thumbs down, all in all. I've even seen her in recital and it was pretty great, but even in that her lieder wasn't the hilight- the russian was. This cd just doesn't do it. (I really think she does much better with the full-lyric opera rep like Rusalka and Manon.)

Renee Fleming is the best at anything she sings. She is my absolute favorite singer. I think she sings Schubert wonderfully.
