Future Runs Magnetic by Battleme on Apple Music

EDITORS’ NOTES

Singer/songwriter Matt Drenik relocated from Austin, Texas to Portland, Ore., leaving his band Lions behind and finding new success with Battleme when his song “Lights,” cowritten with the Forest Rangers, became a musical highlight on the FX show Sons of Anarchy. (Another song, “Burn This Town” was featured as the finale of season two.) For Future Runs Magnetic, Drenik teamed up with Portland natives Eric Johnston (bass), Zach Richards (drums), Evan Railton (synths), and producer Doug Boehm (Girls, Dr. Dog, Guided by Voices) to fully represent his latest batch of tunes. These include several of his finest pop songs to date, including the leadoff track “Just Weight,” “Nights on the Strand," and the extended “We Get Out,” where the guitars feed back for a cathartic end. The band chemistry brings true blood to the electricity of “We Are Underground” and a pulsing excitement to the dynamic “I Want My Kim Deal,” a clear reference to the Pixies/Breeders musician. “I Am a Lightning Bolt” centers on Drenik’s earnest vocals with an under-two-minute tune that would do Guided By Voices proud.

About Battleme

Perhaps best known as the singer and guitarist of the Austin, Texas band Lions, Matt Drenik explores lo-fi folk and electro with his solo project Battleme. Started in 2009 after he was diagnosed with uveitis, an auto-immune disease that affects the eyes, the songwriter began to find his writing moving in a more expansive and personal direction. Looking for an outlet for all this new material, he relocated from Austin to Portland, Oregon and began writing songs in his basement, eventually churning out over 40 songs before getting the attention of Ghostland Observatory's Thomas Turner, who signed him to his Trashy Moped label in 2010. Drenik continued to build and refine his sound, creating a contemplative blend of lo-fi, folk, and electro that was a serious departure from the giant rock jams of LIONS. His full-length debut under his solo moniker, the eponymously titled Battleme, arrived in 2012 on Trashy Moped.

Two years later, he delivered his sophomore full-length, Future Runs Magnetic, featuring production by Doug Boehm (Tokyo Police Club, Girls, Guided by Voices). Habitual Love Songs followed in 2016, and featured the single "Shake Shake." Drenik then pared things down for a solo EP before returning to his full-band work with 2017's Cult Psychotica. Included on the album are the singles "Testament" and "Hot Mess." ~ Gregory Heaney
