15 Songs, 41 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

This collection captures a crucial transitional time in Rick Nelson's career—the one in which he came to full musical maturity. The mid-'60s tracks here bear echoes of Nelson's early years as a pop-rock teen idol. But by the end of the '60s, Nelson's had taken took a sharp left turn, and he became a pioneering part of the burgeoning L.A. country-rock scene. The onetime clean-cut kid, now nearing 30, started growing his hair out and covering Bob Dylan ("She Belongs to Me") as well as penning his own tracks that were in tune with the times. Ironically, in 1972 a song about his old fans' dismissal of his new sound, "Garden Party," gave Nelson his biggest hit in 10 years.

Under rated Ricky!

This voice is still amazing to me. He is so under appreciated in the music world. Whoever chose his songs way back when was brilliant and add to that a classic like Garden Party and the mix is perfect. I like this record mostly because there are songs that you dont hear very often. String Along is great and of course his version of Fools Rush In is the iconic version. Fadeway is the EAGLES sound before the Eagles! Look who they copied? The Southern California Rock sound was obviously invented by this man Ricky Nelson. The price is right on this one.

The Best of Ricky Nelson

I grew up watching Ricky and hoping every episode of Ozzie and Harriett would have him singing one of his great songs.. Fools Rush In has always been one of my favorite. I would recommend this to everyone

RockaBilly Deluxe

This is an important collection for anyone who enjoys the California country-rock sound of the seventies, a musical genre that was birthed in the dying embers of what was Buffalo Springfield, and fanned back into existence by Poco and Nelson's Stone Canyon Band and the Flying Burrito Brothers. Of all these, The Stone Canyon Band was made up of the finest musicians, led by the legendary Slide guitarist Tom Brumley. "One Night Stand" is still one of the finest Rockabilly performances I've ever heard, and is strangely missing from the "Legacy collection" and ignored in the above reviews. You will never hear a finer, more polished musical lead than Brumley's guitar work in this song. "She Belongs to Me", was a top-40 hit and demonstrates the fact that Nelson could always, effortlessly, interpret Dylan's work as well as, or better than, anyone else. Whether you're a Rick Nelson fan or not, if you enjoy California Rockabilly, you should add this collection to your own.
