iTunes Review

For their debut album, after a series of EPs, Psychic…Powerless… expands on the band’s shock-rock origins and delves even deeper into their sonic mischief. Guitarist Paul Leary leads the attack with guitar lines that rarely fall back on tradition and when they do (“Gary Floyd”), it’s to subvert the genre they’re playing with. To some, this will sound like chaotic noise. However, patience and a bizarre sense of humor will help to better understand the distorted chaos of “Concubine,” the noise patrol of “Eye of the Chicken” and the multiple-drummer attack of “Dum Dum” that keeps disappearing in hallucinatory sonic shifts. “Woly Boly” sounds like Elvis Presley having a mental breakdown. “Negro Observer” settles into folk-rock with singer Gibby Haynes unable to sit still. “Butthole Surfer” is more a tribal chant than an actual theme song. “Lady Sniff,’ ”Cherub” and “Mexican Caravan” represent the best of the band to this point with its crazy mutterings, cryptic guitar lines and off-kilter rhythms.

Flawless Album

not one bad song... Gibby Haynes is one unique vocalist. If you like this stuff i sugest checking out Scratch Acid and The Jesus Lizard, both great bands. Jesus Lizard originated after Scratch Acid broke up, so both have a similar, great sound.

Gives me the creeps

This album is one of the best outputs by the buttholes. Musically it is bizarre, I shudder to think what experiences inspired Gibby to write these songs.

Dark and's Butthole Surfers

Cherub sounds familiar, oh yeah it was in that Richard Kern movie...

Arguably the most infamously named band in the annals of popular music -- for years, radio found their moniker unspeakable, and the press deemed it unprintable -- Butthole Surfers long reigned among the most twisted and depraved acts ever to bubble up from the American underground. Masters of calculated outrage, the group fused the sicko antics of shock rock with a distinct and chaotic mishmash of avant-garde, hardcore, and Texas psychedelia; sleazy, confrontational, and spiteful, songs like "The...
