EDITORS’ NOTES

Coming out of East Oakland, Yukmouth is a veteran emcee who's been putting in work for several decades now. A founding member of The Luniz (alongside Numskull), he first hit the scene in the early '90s and scored a tremendous hit single with the 1995 classic smokers' tale "I Got 5 on It." He dropped his first solo record—Thugged Out: The Albulation—in 1998. He has since stayed extremely busy in the studio, releasing new material pretty much every year, appearing in random movies and DVDs, running his own label (Smoke-A-Lot Records), doing various collabos, and repping for crews like Thug Lordz (with fellow Bay Area OGs Spice 1 and C-BO) and The Regime. GAS (Grow and Sale) is at least his ninth official solo joint, and it follows the usual Yukmouth formula: bass-heavy beatwork, green-themed lyricism, and features from a wide variety of Cali legends (Dru Down, B-Legit, Keak Da Sneak) and younger cats (Berner, Lee Majors, Joe Blow) alike. Check out "Stoner Chick," "Rat Pack," and "Swisher."

TITLE TIME

About Yukmouth

Rapper Yukmouth first surfaced as one half of the Oakland, California-based duo the Luniz; debuting in 1995 with the album Operation Stackola, they launched a major hit with the single "I Got 5 on It." With the release of 1997's Lunitik Musik, Yukmouth re-christened himself Smoke-a-Lot, but took back his old name in time to make his solo debut a year later with Thugged Out: The Albulation. Thug Lord: The New Testament and Block Shit were issued in spring 2001. United Ghettos of America appeared in 2002 and was followed two years later by a second volume. Million Dollar Mouthpiece dropped in 2008. The West Coast Don arrived in 2009, while 2010 saw the release of the 420 mixtape. A string of solo releases and collaborations came steadily over the next seven years, culminating in a two-part release in 2017, JJ Based on a Vill Story. ~ Jason Ankeny
