It makes complete sense that several members of The Gods Themselves were once in a Washington state–based Shocking Blue cover band called Daemon Lovers. Astra Elane nails the wild side of the Dutch goddess Mariska Veres with vocals both no-nonsense and sensual. Matched with Damion Heintschel’s brutally fuzzed-out baritone guitar and Collin O’Meara’s danceable beats, the group sound like The Gang of Four transformed into a psychedelic pop band. “I Am the President” screams to be an anthem, while “W.I.T.O.” settles into a crazy wah-wah experiment as exciting as The B-52’s in their time. “Pony” is pure seductive mastery.
