Album Review

Soundtrack work suits Thomas Dolby, who here turns in a variety of musical settings for a computer animation video that include everything from moody electronic instrumentals and dance tracks to a '30s pop pastiche complete with horn section ("Nuvague"). Five of the nine tracks have vocals, two of which are contributed by Dr. Fiorella Terenzi. Dolby himself sings, raps, and even murmurs Napoleon's words of love to Josephine. As a nonvisual listening experience, it all seems scattered, but The Gate to the Mind's Eye demonstrates Dolby's continuing inventiveness.

Cool album and Video

I first heard this music while viewing the video at Griffith Park Observatory Planetarium. It also introduced me to Dr. Fiorello Terenzi. It's great music on its own, but tied together with what were at the time some groundbreaking visuals, it becomes outstanding!

Unexpected Gem from Dolby

Keep in mind this is a soundtrack of which Dolby does an excellent job, and one must buy the video as well. Its stunning for what it did visually before the latest advancements. If you have pushed off Dolby as an 80's one hit wonder, don't be fooled, Dolby is much more of a music genius and this soundtrack shows that. He delivers a wide variety of feel to each track. A must have for your collection video and soundtrack library.

A good listen

Actually the 1st time I heard these songs is when I watched the video of the same name. The songs fit in well with the animation, and they stood out. So I bought the CD. It's great music to space out to. Very enjoyable!

Though he never had many hits, Thomas Dolby became one of the most recognizable figures of the synth pop movement of early-'80s new wave. This was largely due to his skillful marketing. Dolby promoted himself as a kind of mad scientist, an egghead who had successfully harnessed the power of synthesizers and samplers and used them to make catchy pop and light electro-funk. Before he launched a solo career, Dolby had worked as a studio musician, technician, and songwriter; his most notable work as...
