iTunes Review

The debut by duo Bass Drum Of Death was actually recorded solely by mastermind (and guitarist/vocalist) John Barrett, who sang, bashed drums (more cymbals and snares than bass drum, oddly) and guitar, all the while recording and knob-twiddling and computer-izing (using USB microphones, we note). Counterpart Colin Sneed came along later to take over the drum beating duties, giving John more freedom to slice, dice and pulverize his guitar into a hot, punk-rock mess. Sounding a little like first-wave Wavves, BDOD trim away some of the excessive reverb and go straight for the jugular with sharp, gut deflating riffs. There are accents of surf twang on “Nerve Jamming” and “Young Pros,” and John’s swampy guitar is as gooey as tar on “Heart Attack Kid,” but for the most part, it’s a garage-hewn, Detroit style rock ’n’ roll brawl fueling tracks like “GB City” and the jagged-toothed “Get Found.” We used to be surprised when duos could make this much noise; now it’s just a delight to discover them.

Bass Drum of Death kills!

These Mississippi kids kick some straight up bluesy, trashy-garage, up-tempo rock-n-roll! These guys bring the drums and guitar right up in your face. The drums drive each song with fervor and John’s guitar is a steady rhythm machine. This album has that great feel of having been done in one take and performed live in the studio. The Fat Possum records site says this album was recorded with nothing more than a USB microphone, a computer, a guitar and a drum set. The stripped down simplicity of it all simply shines through! Hats off to guys who still mic their amps and rock it this hard! Lyrically, it’s nothing an average adolescent wouldn’t write about….drugs, dreams, girls, Elvis, bongs and things in your brain. Admittedly, the lyrics are a tad hard to understand on most tracks, but for me at least, it just adds to the beauty of this recording! I’ve listened to this thing back-to-back for nearly two days now. Fans of Jon Spencer Blues explosion, Left Lane Cruiser, The Ringers, The Hives, Scott H. Biram or especially the songs written by Beck for Sex Bob-Omb in “Scott Pilgrim,” pay attention to these guys. For what it’s worth the songs I’m partial to on this album are GB City, Velvet Itch, Nerve Jamming, Get found and an interesting cover of He’s so Fine! An absolutely brilliant debut album!
