iTunes Review

The Milagres' 2010 debut, Seven Summits, was a record of huge textures and rhythms sturdy and sweeping enough to carry away a herd of buffalo. Frontman Kyle Wilson suffered a terrible mountain climbing accident after Seven Summits was released; Glowing Mouth is the result of his months of recuperation, spent in a kind of creative therapy. It’s a beautiful record, with grand vistas of strings, guitars, and surging synths, and Wilson’s moving voice is a many-faceted force of nature. Critics have mentioned bands like Coldplay in their reviews, and while that comparison is apt, so is the whole East Coast indie scene of the last decade—and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. “Halfway” alone is a gem of a song, polishing and perfecting all the “pretty” aspects of bands like Animal Collective, Fleet Foxes, and Grizzly Bear and burrowing into the brain with a nifty vocal hook. The next two tracks show the band flowing breezily from a rollicking rocker to a soulful, organ-driven number; both songs deliver the kind of confident genre-hopping turned out by the likes of the underrated band Portugal. The Man.

Soon after the album was completed, the frontman went on a climbing expedition and took a spill that resulted in a serious back injury. While bedridden, he wrote the bulk of their sophomore album.
