iTunes Review

Dale Watson has always been the quintessential torch-carrier for traditional country, pushing forward the classic honky-tonk style of artists like Merle Haggard and Del Reeves. But on The Sun Sessions, Watson's fealty to old-school country sounds takes a somewhat different angle. Memphis' iconic Sun Studio is famed for being the birthplace of rock 'n' roll (via the earliest recordings of Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, et al), but Johnny Cash's singular blend of country and rockabilly was born there too. And in cutting a batch of original tunes at Sun, Watson takes dead aim at the classic sound Cash crafted at 706 Union Avenue. The Sun Sessions is an earnest homage to Cash's signature sound, from the boom-chicka-boom train rhythms to the low-register guitar twang and crater-deep vocals. But this is more than mere revivalism; Watson's own toolkit frequently incorporates those elements anyway. Here, his expert application of them in the service of solid songwriting adds up to an album that's incisive on its own terms.

Customer Reviews

All those saying Dale Watson is a 'wanna-be' and 'copy-cat' obviously have no clue about his past or history. Watson has been a leader in the Texas music industry for decades and has a highly respected reputation. This current album is a great TRIBUTE to the early sounds of Sun Records and, obviously, Johnny Cash. Purchase, sit back and enjoy a classic feel with new lyrics.

Your not from Texas you don't get it.

Dale is the real deal not one of those want-a-bes that Nashville tells you is country. This album is another example of what we are missing in country music, thank you Dale.

A staunch adherent of old-style honky tonk and Bakersfield country, Dale Watson has positioned himself as a tattooed, stubbornly independent outsider only interested in recording authentic country music. As a result, he hasn't become a major star, but his music has been championed by numerous critics and has earned him a fervently loyal fan base. Watson was born in Alabama in 1962 but spent his teenage years near Houston, and he grew to think of Texas as his true home state. His father and brother...
