iTunes Review

One of the most prolific groups to ever step into a recording booth, the Crusaders began their long and storied career as the Jazz Crusaders, debuting with the album Freedom Sound way back in 1961. After dropping 17 albums in less than a decade, they truncated their name, tweaked their sound, and expanded their line-up, adding more electricity to the mix. Released on Bob Thiele's much-loved Blue Thumb label, 1 is a double album that sees them moving further from straight jazz and more into funk/fusion territory, with 12 instrumental selections certain to put some pep in your step. The core group of Wayne Henderson, Joe Sample, Stix Hooper, and Wilton Felder remains as solid as ever, but also benefit from the contributions of Chuck Rainey and Larry Carlton, among others. A great starting point if you're just getting into the group, be sure to check out "Georgia Cottonfield," "Mystique Blues," "Mosadi," and the Carole King cover "So Far Away."

Thanks for the memories

This was one of my first vinyl jazz albums. The Crusaders are one of the greatest jazz bands of all times and this album prove why. These four guys along with Larry Carlton really make music that is memorable. Music that can be played in any era and enjoyed.

At Long Last a Classic is Available at a Fair Price

This wonderful groundbreaking album until recently was only available as an import CD. What a great find!!!! Good job itunes for bringing us back a classic. The Crusaders best ever, long forgotten.

Finally I found it. One of my favorite all time LPs now on mpg!

There are three great Crusaders LP's. This is the first and best. Their other double LP release as the "Crusaders" where the dropped the Jazz in Jazz Crusaders was outstanding also. The third LP was Lighthouse '69 which had two tracks--Get Back--their version of the Beatles tune was a smash, and "Willie and Laura May Jones" are perhaps their best two recordings. I've been too busy to copy these over from vinyl but I guess I'll have to as I can't find them anywhere on mpg. Do yourself a HUGE FAVOR and get a copy of this one to start. You will be hooked. These are instrumental recordings that you can listen to over and over again all day and never get tired of them. Just a smooth sound that will thrill you every time. A MUST HAVE. TRUST ME!

Back in 1954, Houston pianist Joe Sample teamed up with high school friends tenor saxophonist Wilton Felder and drummer Stix Hooper to form the Swingsters. Within a short time, they were joined by trombonist Wayne Henderson, flutist Hubert Laws, and bassist Henry Wilson and the group became the Modern Jazz Sextet. With the move of Sample, Felder, Hooper, and Henderson to Los Angeles in 1960, the band (a quintet with the bass spot constantly changing) took on the name of the Jazz Crusaders. The following...
