Album Review

Candye Kane is a big-voiced blues singer with a twist. Though they are mostly credited as originals, the tunes are familiar from other blues, R&B, and jump blues compositions. The differences lie in Kane's lyrics and in her enthusiasm in singing them. The former adult film star stakes out a pan-sexual stance that she expounds lustily. Jack Tempchin's "Who Do You Love?" finds her endorsing homosexuality, a ménage à trois, and prostitution, and assuring her listeners that God does, too. Her own "(Hey Mister!) She Was My Baby Last Night" portrays an unexpected combination in a romantic triangle. In "For Your Love," Kane lists a series of sexual fantasy characters ranging from "a dominatrix with a whip up above" to "a White House intern." And "Let's Commit Adultery" states its position in its title. The backing band, which occasionally features Dave Alvin and Marcia Ball, is excellent, but the distinctive element in the mix is Kane's lusty persona.

Customer Reviews

I'm a sexy slavegirl for your love ...

Swingy blues, bluesy swing -- whatever, as long as it's as sexy and classy as this album. Candye's voice is like Candye's body: big, beautiful, and impossible to ignore! On this album, she covers the range from sultry purr to brassy holler, and hits all the right notes in between. The title track will knock you flat with its spitfire attitude and perfect horns. Other highlights are "For Your Love," and "Let's Commit Adultery." The thing is, ALL the songs on this album are great. There's not a dud in the pack.

One of the best artists alive!

If you ever get the chance to see Candye Kane perform live, do not miss it! What a voice and what a personality. The only artist I have ever heard who is actually better in person than on CD.

Picks You Up And Puts You Down Again!

So...white girls can't sing the blues, or jazz or...what crock! Every time I listen to this woman's absolutely beautiful voice I feel empowered. Her clear vocalizations, tough as nails approach and a great band to boot makes for one fantastic listening experience. Best of all, she comes without the baggage of an Amy Winehouse. Keep on keepin' on, Candye. For those who don't appreciate what a great singer is--well, it's their loss. You go, girl!

Los Angeles native Candye Kane sings a sassy and showbiz-savvy blend of blues and soul that takes no prisoners of any persuasion. Kane has been a lot of things in her life, from a mother and serious student to a pinup girl and actress (both on-stage and in risqué movies), and she even did a stint as a serious, full-tilt punk rocker. She'd be just another fringe player in L.A. except for two things -- she can sing like nobody's business and she has a sexy, intelligent, and passionate musical vision...
