Editors’ Notes

Solidifying the mainstream breakthrough of Document, Green found R.E.M. in some of its most playful and solemn moments. Its first album under a new contract with Warner Bros., the disc provided a stack of direct, rousing anthems ("Get Up," "Pop Song 89") that gave the band its biggest single to date in the gently childlike "Stand." "Turn You Inside Out" questioned the gamesmanship of both romance and major-league rock. Other musical shadings marked one of R.E.M.'s most touching songs yet,the acoustic "You Are theEverything," while "WorldLeader Pretend" and "I Remember California" were the products of a deep moodiness. More consistent albums would follow, but Green<’/i>s best stuff retains its freshness nearly 20 years on.

While there were a number of hardcore and punk bands in the U.S. during the early '80s, R.E.M. brought guitar pop back into the underground lexicon. Combining ringing guitar hooks with mumbled, cryptic lyrics and a D.I.Y. aesthetic borrowed from post-punk, the band simultaneously sounded traditional...
