What Happens in Lagos

What Happens in Lagos

On his second album, 2017’s What Happens in Lagos, Ajebutter 22—born Akintoye Balogun—offers a mellow take on his life as a Lagosian. Referencing quintessential topics, such as the state of the economy, tales of romance, youthful aspirations, politics, and the city’s temptations, Ajebutter expresses his urban reflections from his perspective. “I’ll rap about what happens in my life,” he rap-sings on the album opener, and does exactly that through his trademark languid delivery. That mellowness runs through the project, with relaxed tempos giving way to island vibes, while relatable lyrics—both in English and Yoruba—grant the album a vicarious effect. With Ajebutter’s wordplay anchoring his narratives, the poetry of Koromone intersperses his storytelling, and appearances by M.I, Dremo, Maleek Berry, Falz, and Odunsi (The Engine) smoothly fill out the project.
