Album Review

With Unpredictable, Mystikal showed signs of breaking away from the No Limit murk of gangstas, guns, and money. Instead of continuing in this direction with its follow-up, Ghetto Fabulous, he decided to stick with No Limit's directionless recycling of beats, ideas, and themes. Like any of the label's 1998 offerings, there are glimmers of promise buried amid all the repetition, but what stands out is the monotony of the music and the lyrics. Since Mystikal is a better rapper than many of his No Limit cohorts, Ghetto Fabulous is more listenable than the average record the label puts out, but the music never challenges him to reach new heights. Consequently, the record feels flat, despite a few moments where Mystikal is able to truly show listeners what he's made of.

Excellent effort from the prince of the south

With his second No Limit release, Mystikal delivered one of the best hip hop albums of 1998. In a year full of classics, 'Ghetto Fabulous' managed to sound fresh & original as well as cutting edge. Check out 'That's The N***a', 'Let's Go Do It' (with Snoop & Silkk), 'Whacha Want, Whacha Need' (with Busta Rhymes), 'What's Your Alias?' & the ultra smooth title track. An essential for any fan of No Limit and Ca$h Money.

Once one of the leading rappers on Master P's No Limit record label, Mystikal quickly evolved beyond the label's clichéd thug trappings and found himself one of the Dirty South's most recognized rappers, alongside the likes of Juvenile and Ludacris. Like No Limit itself, Mystikal is a New Orleans native. He released an eponymous debut on the independent label Big Boy in June 1995. It earned the attention of Jive Records, who signed him later that year. His official major-label debut, Mind of Mystikal,...
