iTunes Editors’ Notes

Ghetto Fabulous picks up where Unpredictable left off, reveling in the creative synergy of Mystikal’s partnership with No Limit Records. These two parties brought out the best in each other. Mystikal’s dangerously off-kilter rhymes were reinforced by a frightening sense of focus and control, which is exactly the formula employed by Beats by the Pound, No Limit’s in-house production team. While the whole album maintains a high standard of quality, it begins with four songs that could only have been birthed by the label’s collaboration with Mystikal: “There He Go,” “Round Out the Tank,” “Keep It Hype," and “That’s the Ni**a.” This sequence is not only one of the great opening runs of any album in rap history; it's a primer for anyone looking to understand the particular essence of '90s-era New Orleans hip-hop. For all the attention heaped on New York and Los Angeles, no city came up with something as singular as “That’s the Ni**a,” a positively dizzying song that harks back to the undiluted enthusiasm of rap’s earliest days.

Like No Limit itself, Mystikal is a New Orleans native. He released an eponymous debut on the independent label Big Boy in June 1995. It earned the attention of Jive Records, who signed him later that year. His official...
